Traditional Christmas Eve celebrations in Bethlehem, the biblical birthplace of Jesus, were canceled due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, turning the usually bustling city into an almost deserted ghost town. Festive lights, the iconic Christmas tree in Manger Square and the traditional crowds of tourists were notably absent, replaced by dozens of Palestinian security forces patrolling the quiet square, news agency Associated Press (AP) reported.
In absence of Christmas trees and lights this year, Brother John Vinh, a Franciscan monk from Vietnam, remarked, ‘There is just darkness,’ as reported by the AP. The nativity scene at Manger Square depicted an infant Jesus wrapped in a white shroud, symbolizing the countless children lost in the Gaza conflict. Barbed wire surrounded the scene, a stark contrast to the usual merry lights and colors that fill the square during the Christmas season.
The report noted that the cancellation of Christmas festivities dealt a severe blow to Bethlehem’s economy, as tourism contributes an estimated 70% of its income, especially during the Christmas season. More than 70 hotels in Bethlehem have been forced to close, leaving thousands unemployed, due to major airlines canceling flights to Israel and few foreigners arriving, according to the AP.
Gift shops opened slowly on Christmas Eve, with very few visitors.”When individuals in Gaza lack basic homes, it’s difficult to rationalize the act of planting a tree and engaging in usual celebrations,” remarked Ala’a Salameh, proprietor of the Aftim restaurant situated near the intersection, as conveyed to the AP.
Bethlehem Mayor Hana Haniyeh delivered a poignant message to the crowd under a banner that read, “Bethlehem’s Christmas bells are ringing for a cease-fire in Gaza,” adding, “Every year our message at Christmas is peace And of love, but this year it’s one.” A message of sorrow, grief and anger.”
The impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict extends beyond Bethlehem, disrupting life throughout the West Bank. The report said that since October 7, access to Bethlehem and other Palestinian cities has been challenging due to military checkpoints, with restrictions preventing Palestinians from leaving the area for work in Israel.
The Gaza War, triggered by Hamas’ attack on southern Israel, has resulted in large numbers of casualties and displacement. “The continuing conflict has resulted in heightened levels of violence, contributing to an escalation in the casualty count on both sides.”
While Bethlehem faced a Christmas Eve disaster, residents and local businesses expressed hope for peace and stability in the area.
